 FOR SALE : YORKSHIRE OR YORKIST RANGE ANTIQUE CAST IRON COOKING RANGE This is a cooking range with open fire, called a "Yorkshire Range" or a "Yorkist" and I think its late Victorian / Edwardian, so its very well made and probably efficient to use unlike some of the cruder early designs. However, it doesn't have a lot of flowery detail, as you can see. It is very solid and made from cast iron. The back of the oven (not seen) has been recently restored with thick sheet steel so it is in working order. You will need it installing properly by a builder.
The oven interior has obviously not been used for a long time and will need brushing out and probably sealing with some vegetable oil. Clearly you wouldn't want paint or black lead coming into contact with food.
The open fire section has 2 "lollypops" for pans, and a wide pan stand that hinges back and forth. I suppose you would use that for a casserole or large pan. There is the usual grate inside. A removable sloping cast iron throat behind the fire has a corrugated shape for thermal efficiency. The canopy above hinges open to adjust the draw on the fire. There are various ducts with removable access covers so the hot gasses are channelled round the ovens. I guess this will make it much more efficient than a normal open fire.
There are 2 ovens. The lower main oven has 2 removable, adjustable height cast iron shelves. There are more positions available than our modern oven! The oven door has adjustable vents top and bottom. The top oven has a drop down door, and a damper control on the left hand side (you can just see it in the photo). The oven comes with a cannon ball to warm your bed (!). I understand you just wrap it in a towel when it is heated up, and put it between the sheets to ensure cosy toes.
There is a removable shelf under the main oven door. I guess this is good for standing stuff on to keep warm, or just to warm your feet on!
