SALVAGE AT HOMEBUILDING SHOW
Last weekend's Homebuilding and Renovating Show had a new architectural salvage section next to the Period Living Pavilion. Five businesses, from the South of England, took part in creating a new salvage yard area; Woodstone from Surrey, Cox's Yard from Gloucestershire, The Old Radiator Company from Sussex, Olliffs Architectural from Bristol and Source Antiques from Somerset. The Show was very busy every day and it is thought there were more than the 35,000 visitors of last year.

Emma Farrington from Period Living helped to put together the salvage area. She said "I am really proud of the effort everyone put in to bring reclamation and restoration to the show. The salvage area and period pavilion looked fantastic."

Nick and Donna Cowen from Antique Baths of Ivybridge, Devon were in the Period Living Pavilion. On the Thursday trade day, they said "After a two year break, we're back here again. We've been really busy since January, with a few really interesting projects; working on bathrooms at the Tregothan Estate in Cornwall that sells tea, and for the Earl of Shaftesbury at his St Giles House in Dorset."

Lou Cronin from Woodstone and the Original Homestore said "We had a fabulous response from visitors at the show - everyone loved the mixture we have of new and old pieces - and the overall feel was that people were really excited to see something a bit different from the High Street. It was a great opportunity for us to introduce our store to a totally new range of people and it seems to have worked as the phone has been red hot since we got back!"

Woodstone, Cox's Yard, Antique Baths of Ivybridge and Period Living will all be Salvo Fair 2011, 24-26 June, Knebworth House, Hertfordshire.

One of fifteen shipping containers, part of a Cornish Design project [photo: BBC
CORNISH SHIPPING CONTAINER ART PROJECT
For nine weeks, design ideas relating to Cornwall are being celebrated through a series of shipping containers placed around the coast.

The theme is surprising design stories. The stories have been nominated by a number of people in the world of design, culture and academia including Rick Stein and Kevin McCloud. Some stories are expected like The Tate St Ives and wind farms, but others not so expected like titanium, which was discovered in Cornwall, wireless telegraphy and the Cornish shovel.

Each of the fifteen containers is painted with a striking colourful design. The containers have been placed in unusual places, bike trails, city centres, sand dunes, and piers. Shipping containers were seen as as the ideal vehicle for the display of each design story, being a relevant symbol for a county surrounded by sea, and an icon of design in their own right.

The exhibition runs from 19th February to 25th April.

Where Trinity Marine go to source their stock in the Far East
TRINITY MARINE TO EXHIBIT AT SALVO FAIR 2011
This year's Salvo Fair will be the first for Devon-based nautical specialists Trinity Marine. The company has been operating for many years from a warehouse and small shop in South Devon. Now with a comprehensive website, Trinity Marine can offer its wares to a far wider audience. Attending the Salvo Fair is all part of getting its name out there.

The source of Trinity Marine's stock has been a well-kept secret, but with the supply of dilapidated old ships running thin, it is happy to reveal that staff travel extensively around Asia to buy goods.

Trinity Marine says on its website, 'In recent years we have been salvaging thousands of fixtures, fittings & items of furniture from the best ocean liners and passenger ships stricken at the ship-breakers in the Far East.'

'We have been involved in the largest marine films, theme-parks and retail outlets as well as countless privately owned pubs, restaurants & homes around the world. We are also ideal for those who love vintage, retro, mid-century design, 20th century industrial, art nouveau, art deco, 50's deco.'

Mark Jameson, from Trinity Marine said, "For the Salvo Fair we hope to bring along some good examples of all the different kinds of things we stock."

Salvo Fair is open from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th June at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire.

Tiles from The Old Radiator Company at Listed Property Show 2009
LISTED PROPERTY SHOW THIS WEEKEND
Exhibitors for this year's Listed Property Show include Architectural Heritage and Winchcombe Reclamation from Gloucestershire, Charles Brooking Collection from Surrey and The Old Radiator Company from Kent.

Kelly-Marie Smith from Listed Property Owners Club says 'As we all know, owning a listed property is not always health, wealth and happiness. Legislation, conservation and regulation can seem like the three horsemen of the listed property owner's apocalypse. Just finding a decent builder or understanding the VAT rules is enough to give you sleepless nights.'

'The Listed Property Show is a free event for select Listed Property owners, designed to banish all your domestic nightmares and ensure another 12 months of healthy home-ownership. For February 2011, we've bought together the industry's best, all under one roof in London's Olympia.

'It's a unique opportunity for a stress free one-to-one session with our ever-popular conservation officers, who will work through hypothetical plans for extension or alteration. From window and door manufacturers, to craftsmen and 'caring' builders, to the rather more prosaic experts in fire protection or insurance.'

The Listed Property Show is held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th February at Olympia in London. Admission is free.

Joey the Musical Toy, mixed media, by David Taborn [photo Taborn
RECLAIMED ART EXHIBITION AT LASSCO
Reclaimed, a one man show by David Taborn, runs from 2 - 21 December 2010 (exc Sundays) at Lassco Brunswick House.

Taborn writes that the mixed media piece (photo above) draws together references to Joseph Beuys, Sigmund Freud and Richard Wagner through the famous Bruno Bettelheim case study of 1959, 'Joey the Mechanical Boy', about an autistic boy named Joey who behaved as if he were a machine: 'he could not drink, except through elaborate piping systems - liquids had to be pumped into him.

Born in Austria, Bettelheim was a Freudian child psychologist who had spent 11 months in Buchenwald concentration camp before emigrating to America. The case study describes how Joey created his own prison-heterotopia: imprisoned in his own mechanical fluids (Bettelheim states that for a long time Joey spoke about 'master-paintings' and a 'master-painting room') - Joey paradoxically became the driver of his own machine.

In the painting itself, a charred frame within the frame contains an unauthenticated work on paper by Beuys (dated 1955, the year Beuys's studio caught fire) bought by Taborn at auction, of a circle and hearts, using hare's blood and fat as the medium. Forms in the Beuys original are echoed throughout the painting as a whole (circular saw, ball-cock, melting Wagner vinyl records). Like Schrodinger's cat, the work on paper within the painting hovers uncomfortably between things that are and things that aren't: whether the work is indeed a Beuys; whether 'social sculpture' and the high aspirations of Wagner, Beuys and Bettelheim for humanity and society (the Wagnerian 'gesamtkunstwerk' which Beuys espoused) can square with their own self-generated fictions and personas, or even with their ambiguous relationship to Judaism/social fracture.

JJ Charlesworth wrote of his 2008 New York exhibition, 'Looking at David Taborn's work is always fun. This is not for a lack of seriousness on the artist's part. But that we should feel such enjoyment in observing his works, and that this enjoyment should seem unusual, perhaps even uncomfortable, does say something about the way art today is supposed to display its seriousness. Visual pleasure, vivid colour, robust, energetic, sumptuous and demotic forms - such experiences are often thought of as trivial or superficial, as somehow 'merely' a question of individual gratification or self-indulgence, when there are more sober and pressing matters in the world that art should attempt to address.'

Some of the pieces use reclaimed materials.

For an exciting day of rummaging through endless salvagey goodies and to enjoy the craftsmanship and history of many a unique object come along to Salvo Fair. As well as browsing through the antiques and salvage at the Fair, Knebworth has other facilities which make for a fun family day out. Knebworth Fort is an adventure playground. There are formal gardens parts of which were restored by Gertrude Jekyll, a dinosaur trail through the woodland wilderness, tea rooms, and last but not least Knebworth House itself, an early Victorian gothic fantasy and the seat of Lord and Lady Cobbold whose family have lived there since 1490 shortly after fighting for Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth Field and where the phrase 'the pen is mightier than the sword' was written. The Salvo Fair is a trade fair to which the public are welcome on the Saturday and Sunday.

See you there!

Catchpole & Rye stand at Decorex 2010
GOOD BUZZ AT SEPTEMBER FAIRS
"Decorex has been absolutely fabulous, really good," said Guy Trench from Antiques By Design. "At Decorex reclaimed furniture and lighting are selling well. We've taken good orders of over £1,000. Battersea has a great buzz. There has been lots of interest in our feather shades, shot gun lamps and old telephones with LEDs in the receiver and ear piece." Guy Trench also exhibited at Battersea Antiques Fair.

Catchpole and Rye exhibited for the first time at Decorex this year. Tony O'Donnell said, 'We don't really know yet whether we had good sales, or any leads - it's pretty early days. We had some antique baths, basins and WC pans on the stand. We haven't decided yet whether we will exhibit again." Mr O'Donnell said that visitors included Russians with diamonds on the soles of their shoes.

Regulars Victorian Wood Works and Drummonds Bathrooms did not to exhibit at Decorex this year.

Lot 7124, Pine shop cupboard with sign painted doors. Sold £1204
GAZE - DREARY DAY BUT FULL ROOM OF BIDDERS
"Iron wares and garden tools were hot sellers on the sale meadow. In the room a pine shop cupboard with painted doors took £1204 to a phone bidder from North Norfolk." said Carl Willows from TW Gaze. "There was an excellent collection of lots from a local retired gamekeeper, with nine lots in the top twenty five at the Rural and Domestic Bygones sale on the 25th September.

"A fine copper copper went at £685 to trade. Advertising materials still very popular whether enamels, tin, card or painted boxes.A Victorian tin Colman's mustard finger plate in used condition, but rare, went to a Norwich collector for £525, also taking a very early showcard for Starch at £390."

"Perhaps my favourite item, a Victorian bier in superb original condition, made a very reasonable £342. Leather shotgun cases (no contents) featured in the gamekeeper's collection, all famous makers, sold well- top lot a Holland & Holland double at £413."

"Surprise lot was a good clean moleing spade causing gasps at £252. Not a bad snip though for a 17th Century oak spice cabinet making £435. All prices include buyers premium at 12.5 percent plus vat.

Westfield's charity car boot bonanza
WESTFIELD CAR BOOT FAIR
Walking through Westfield last Friday I came across the Car Boot Fair. It was a colourful event and suprisingly some cars were promoting not just clothes but charities.
Two cars particularly caught my eye as they were both promoting reuse for charity. One car boot was displaying Mary's Living and Giving shop in Notting Hill. The Save the Children charity shop with a difference is the idea of Mary Portas, 'Queen of Shops'. It encourages the local community to donate nearly new designer clothes, accessories or home ware.
Then the Donna Ida car displayed designer jeans and an armchair covered in denim. This was encouraging everyone to wear jeans for Jeans for Genes Day on 1st October to help raise money for children with genetic disorders. Old and unwanted donated jeans had also been styled and were to be sold with 50 percent of the proceeds going to the charity at Lily Allen's store, 'Lucy in Disguise'. So this was a guilt-free shopping experience and car booting in style. - SM

National Antiques Week 15-21 Nov 2010
NATIONAL ANTIQUES WEEK 15-21 NOVEMBER 2010
The theme of National Antiques Week 2010 is 'now is the time to buy antiques!'. Antiquesnews and Fairs is working in partnership with Winter Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair and a group of media and antique dealers associations to promote the event.

The National Antiques Week campaign will celebrate the green credentials of antiques and demonstrate the excellent value for money of antiques compared to equivalent new high street purchases.

National Antiques Week promotes the antiques trade and aims to encourage a younger audience to visit antique shops and fairs.

NAW has produced a voucher for free entry into various antique fairs, and is holding a competition to win one of two prizes. Watch this space for details!
