Minton & co Stoke on Trent Encaustic tiled floor
Circa 1850, with makers mark on reverse of each tile.
The design is made entirely of the one 6 x 6 inch tile, tesselating to create this classic pattern.
The tile is a buff coloured slip on a red body.
The tiles have been cleaned on the backs and sides to reove mortar.
9 or 10 of the tiles are worn to the extent that the design has disapeared, you will notice this on the photographs, the worn areas appear as red patches.
I have laid out the design 21 x 10 tiles. You could loose one row and do away with the worn tiles if need be.
Some of the tiles have chips to the corners and sides, commensurate with age
These are very robust tiles and have withstood over 150 years of foot traffic. They still look stunning and have aged well.

9 or 10 have surface wear and loss of pattern.

this is a beautifull example of a salvaged geometric tiled floor circa 1800's
the tiles are all in excellent condition with very little damage, just the odd chip and mark here and there. the tiles have been washed with water and the backs sides and edges cleaned and are free of cement and grout and are ready to fix.
the layout pictured shows 18 panels with 9 encaustic panels and 9 smaller encaustic insets (flower design). also shown is the border surounding only three sides of the design.
the actual layout includes the additional border tiles (to complete an entire border) and three more central panels. 1 x panel including the encaustic panel 8 x 8 inch (each tile 4x4 inch), and two panels with a flower encaustic in each (2x2 inch encaustic - both encaustics are buff on red). i ran out of table top space!.
also included and can be viewed in the gallery are additional tiles for creating threshold designs where the design meets a doorway. in this picture you may notice the missing border tiles!.

the layout pictured shows the design dry layed in the studio. one square meter incorperates 9 encaustic 4 x 4 inch(buff on black) insets. the border incorperates a 6x6 inch buff on brown encaustic. there is only one corner tile for the border design showing a rose motif. this could be replaced with a replacement resulting in 4 or more matching motifs. these are available as reproductions through craven dunnill jackfield, or maw and co.

this is a complex and beautiful example of a salvaged geometric tiled floor circa 1850's maker unknown, although some of the tiles have been stamped with - campbell brick and tile co. stoke on trent
the design was removed from the hallway of a large victorian house in the castelnau area of london nr hammersmith.
the tiles are all in excellent condition with very little damage, just the odd chip and mark here and there. the tiles have been washed with water and the backs sides and edges cleaned and are free of cement and grout and have been sorted and are ready to fix.
the tiles should be cleaned after they have been fixed to achieve the best results. we offer this information as part of the deal, please see below.

the dimensions of the floor are as follows:-
approxamately 20/22 sq m available
encaustic 3x3 inch buff on red
encaustic 2x2 inch buff on red
encaustic 2x2 inch buff on black

aditional encaustics are included although they do not feature in the main design, they are as follows:-

the largest tile in the floor is 4x4 inch, the smallest measures 1.5x1.5 inch (the small buff square).
this is one of the finest examples of an original and available victorian geometric floor i have come across to date. the floor if purchased will be delivered free of charge to anywhere within the m25. i will be happy to deliver any where else so long as my fuel costs are covered.
the floor will be delivered either boxed or bagged. the tiles have been sorted into their individual shapes, sizes and colours. all the tiles will be cleaned to ensure that they can be easily fixed imediately

this is a rare opportunity to purchase a fine collection of minton encaustic floor tiles.
the tiles are in excellent condition with some grout still attatched to the sides. very few have cement on the backs.
this is a fine collection with several design combinations three of which i have composed based on the quantities available. i can send these if you require them.
the quantities are as follows:-
the number preceeding the quantity corresponds to the numbers on the image in the gallery.
1 - quantity 40, encaustic: blue, buff, white, brown, red 6 x 6 inch square 1 inch thick.

Old floor tiles we removed earlier this year from our 90year old house. Not sure what the real name is for them. Terracotta red/orange (hey, I'm colour blind!) in colour. The photo makes them look more orange than they really are. The nearest thing I can find in pcitures on the web was terracota tiles. About an inch or so thick.
