FOR SALE : CAST IRON WHITE ENAMELLED 'NEO-CLASSIC' ART DECO BATH
Cast iron white enamelled 'Neo-Classic' Art Deco bath, plug and waste in right hand end (as illustrated), with integral stepped bath panelling, good condition, 72ins long by 30ins wide approx. (The illustration is taken from a catalogue of GUNTON AND HAVERS Ltd, St George Street, Norwich, Builders and Plumbers Merchants, c1955.)

HISTORY NOTE ON COLOUR: Until the 1920's, sanitaryware makers, including the Chicago Crane Company, and Pittsburgh Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company, had not advertised in consumer mags due to the 'unmentionable' nature of their products. The advent of Art Deco films with undressed starlets bathing indoors in the late 1920s, heralded the emergence of full page ads depicting luxury fantasy bathrooms. Standard (which became Ideal Standard) and Crane began offering porcelain in designer shades, as well as white. In 1929, colors offered were St. Porchaire brown, clair de lune blue, ming green, orchid of vincennes, ivoire de medici, royal copenhagen blue, meissen white, ionian black, rose du barry and tang red. By 1954 in Britain the standard colours on offer in Norwich still included corallin, ivoire de medici, ming green, clair de lune blue, and pearl grey for the Neo-Classic, made by Ideal Standard.
