History: BIS was created on 5 June 2009 by the merger of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
BERR ran from 2007 to 2009.
DIUS was created in 2007 to take over the Department of Education and Skills (DfES) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTi).
DfES ran from 2001 and 2007.
DTi was formed in 1970 with the merger of the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Technology, creating a new cabinet post of Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.
