 FOR SALE : GARDEN STATUE 18TH CENTURY PORTLAND STONE For sale: c1790-1840 - standing at just over 5ft including plinth, a work in Portland Stone of some significance and with genuine provenance: originally part of a group of statues that once stood in the italianate gardens built by Lady Amelia Long in the grounds of Bromley Hill House, the country seat of Sir Charles Long, Lord Farnborough.
Charles Long was a friend to William Pitt and cultural advisor to George IV & William IV, he was a minister and MP; he helped establish the National Gallery and aided the purchase of the Elgin marbles. He negotiated royal commissions with artists such as Canova, Westmacott and Lawrence. Though we are unsure who sculpted this statue, it was undoubtedly commissioned by the Longs and is a beautiful example of 18th century statuary. There is some damage as seen in photographs, the drapery continues to the rear of statue though originally it would have stood in a niche.

This is a casting that was taken from the 'Virgin and Child with the infant St John, CA, 1504-1505'
This casting was taken from the original from the original marble sculpture 'Tondo Taddei', held by the Royal Academy in London.
Bequeathed by Sir George beaumont in 1822, it is the only marble sculpture by Michelangelo in great Britain. This casting was only
allowed due to Arnold Machin's high standing in the Royal Academy.

 FOR SALE : VICTORIAN STATUE OF YOUNG MAIDEN HOLDING DOVES
This Victorian lead statue of a young maiden holding 2 doves was until 1989 gracing the terrace of The Royal Castle Hotel, in Lynton, Devon.
The Royal Castle Hotel was a regular haunt of the Princes of Wales, who later became Kings Edward VII & George V. Originally known as The Castle Hotel in the early 1800s, it is presumed it added the 'Royal' because of its patronage by the Royal family.
The property has now been redeveloped in to luxury apartments and is now known as Castle Heights and can easily be found by Googling Castle Heights/Royal Castle Hotel Lynton.
The vendor owned the hotel in the 1980s and since its sale this statue has been in the vendor's garden. It is only now offered for sale because of personal relocation overseas.
She stands some 24 inches tall and in 1996 Phillips dated her at circa 1880

A very good marble statue ''Belle Epoque'' from 1900's signed C H Monginot. Her works appears regularly at auction making several thousands of$, but not of this size. She was born in 1872 in France. Her father Ch. Monginot is a famous painter & sculptor. She specialised in sculptures mainly of children & women. This marble sculpture represents ''Cupid playing the drums '' and it measures 63.5 cms high and the widest width is 38.5 cms. There are 2 faults, one crack on his left hand (at the wrist ) showing in the photo as discolouration & 1 drum stick missing. Any more info. please email me.
