 STOLEN : 18TH CENTURY WHITE MARBLE AND BRASS SUNDIAL Stolen from Near Winchester on 10 August 2011 Item : An 18th Century white marble balustrade-shaped sundial with a circular brass dial engraved with Roman numerals and a vertical gnomon was stolen from it's position on the front lawn of Avington Park, Hampshire, England.
the sundial is in the form of a four-sided balustrade column with a fluted bulbous lower quarter above a rectangular base, surmounted by a rectangular platform with a raised circular 'plate' onto which the brass dial and gnomon are fitted. The white marble column measures approximately 50cm at the square base, with a height of 120cm. The coat-of-arms of the Chandos family is engraved on the marble.
The sundial was taken from it rectangular stone 'double-platform' plinth on the lawn directly in front of the main entrance to the house.
