 FOR SALE : 17TH CENTURY ITALIAN REREDOS
This magnificent Reredos is described by the writer Pevsner in the Penguin Book "The Buildings of England" and comes from St John the Divine in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire and previously St Peter in Barnsley. It is Italian, circa 1700 and is carved in pine and painted in polychrome colours, featuring two figures of saints, various putti and cherubs with lush acanthus. The top part comprises a monumental picture frame enclosing an original 17th Century oil painting of the marriage of St Anne. The dimensions are 3.55m wide x approx. 4.2m high. The picture frame measures 172 cm high x 188 cm wide. The figures are 94 cm and 96 cm tall respectively. The crucifix shown is later, believed around 1920 and measures186 cm high. The topmost scroll section on the right hand side (in picture shown with putti astride) has been stripped back to pine. All the carving is in wood not gesso. The price of this unique piece is £27,500 (+ VAT for UK and E.E.C. customers).
