 FOR SALE : HEAVY BALL FOOT 19TH CENTURY PINE SIDEBOARD For sale is our ancient, well, at least 19th Century pine sideboard. I bought this from Bart Taylor who operated a stripping bath on Saltisford in Warwick in 1974. He acquired it at a farm sale in Warwickshire some months before and stripped its original paint. It has been with me ever since. Now children have left 'downsizing' requires a new home be found!
Dimensions are 60 inches long by 20 inches wide by 34 inches high to the top of the main piece. The 'dresser board and shelf' at the back of the piece is a further 11 inches to add to overall height.
At some time the ball feet have been probably been replaced (common if standing on damp floors) and a bearer has been added from front to back between the feet and the solid bottom board. If these were removed the item would be 1.5 inches lower!
As can be seen from the photograph it has seven drawers and a two shelf cupboard. It is well made and all drawers have solid wood sides and back with dovetail joints in generally good condition for its age. Several of the drawers require replacement ply or thin board bottoms as the old ones were taken out after being found attractive to woodworm!
Obviously all woodworm was killed when stripped however there are some 'characterful' holes here and there and a some obvious nibbling in the bottom board. Nothing to put me off but some like things perfect.
It is in use 'as is' in what was a busy family home. With light restoration it would be a very striking piece again. Two open shelves above cupboard with large single shelf enclosed by panelled, lockable, doors - all in solid oak.
Oak has matured to a rich, warm, honey-brown patina. Solid, tight, construction, worm free, showing only expected signs of careful usage. Some minor damage to bead-moulding over approx. 1.5 inches at middle edge of right door.
In all, a stylish piece, of superior quality, whose compact dimensions and utilitarian design lend it to a broad range of usage.
