FOR SALE : CAST IRON FIRE BACK
Dutch pattern (the original would have been cast in Germany) fire back depicting "The Garden of Holland" - a Queen holding a crucifix. Beside her a rampant lion clutching a sword and arrows and both encircled by a woven fence with entrance gate. Drapery frames this scene. The fire back measures just under 21"/ 534 mm wide and is just under 31"/ 780 mm high. It is of a delicate casting and the rear edges are sharp and the back smooth which suggests a fairly modern efficient sand casting method which would indicate a post last war casting. It weighs 37 kgs.

FOR SALE : CAST IRON FIRE BACK
This is a modern fire back made in the last 40 years or so. It measures 19" / 484 mm wide by 28" / 710 mm high and is reinforced where the heat of the fire would be in the lower half of the back. It was probably cast in the far East or eastern Europe (my money is on India). It depicts a (presumably) Classical scene - that I am unfortunately ignorant of its symbolism of - featuring what appears to be a Greek couple, her holding a staff in her right hand while giving a plant or bough or some similar emblem to one of 2 cherubs who are in water along with what appears to be a dog. In the background a tree is visible and it is presumably from this tree that the bough or plant matter comes (Tree of knowledge/ Tree of Life?)

FOR SALE : CAST IRON FIRE BACK
A Dutch design and certainly cast on the date shown which is 1650 and with the Crown emblem between the dates cast to commemorate the birth of William III (of Orange) in The Hague that year. The couple in the fore ground are drawing water from a well and the seated man points to the distance indicating news of the birth of William III almost immediately after the death of his father William II. There is a crowd behind these twoalso harkening to the news. The evidence of authenticity for this is on the rear side which shows a very undulating, wavy porridge-like surface symptomatic of outside, earth-mould primitive (not Victorian sand mould )casting. Also this fire back is authentically substantial for its size which is 27" / 685 mm by 20 1/2"/ 520 mm high and is a good 1 3/4" / 45 mm thick and weighs 44 kgs or 97 lbs or in old units 0 - 3 -13 cwt. This is a very nice old fire back.

FOR SALE : CAST IRON FIRE BACK
A Dutch style fire back originally cast in Germany for the Dutch market. This fire back measures 20"/510 mm wide by 30"/ 760 mm high. It is not over thick but is substantial enough for a good domestic fire being about 3/4" / 22 mm thick. It was probably cast in the late 19th century and could be and is likely to be an English cast copy. The fire back depicts a couple - he dressed as a cavalier and she in the feminine equivalent - standing under a fruit tree (almost undoubtedly an apple tree). She holds what looks like a Tudor Rose but it could represent an apple flower. The allegory to Adam and Eve is compelling as is the 'Puritan' aspect to the imagery. The fire back weighs 26 kgs.

FOR SALE : CAST IRON FIRE BACK
This is a rather magnificent, heavy old fire back cast outside in a sand/clay dried mud in Germany in 1650 as shown by its date on the front. It is cracked and contained in a frame that I had made. It is the crack that is part of the fascinating story of this fire backs existence which I will come to in a minute. The back depicts St George charging towards a stylised dragon whose head is the only part visible. The motto of NIL DESPERANDUM means 'never give up' but the heading is a mystery: it appears to say CVRSIVS but when Googled that assemblage of letters does not come up in a sensible answer. The story of this fire back is as follows (and the evidence is, my dear customer, before you) the back was cast outside in Germany during a day which gave way to a storm which included hail stones. The metal had just flowed into the earth mould containing the impression for this back when the heavens opened. As the metal solidified (chilled is the technical term) so the hail stones hit the surface of the back which of course was cast face down and caused instant, highly localised chilling which in turn as the whole back cooled created little craters and holes in the metal which are visible on the back now as in the photos. The fire back was used as a working fire back in one of the fireplaces in a fairly grand house or minor castle and its use was to considerably heat up and reflect heat back into the room. Once the fire was lit at the commencement of a winter it is likely that it was kept burning the whole time throughout the cold period. I estimate that the crack that led to the split commenced some 100 to 150 years of constant use and the expansion and contraction of the fire back led to it tearing along what is in effect a fault line in the metal created that day it was cast. This fire back is a lovely antique piece and still highly useable but now more for the protection of a chimney stack and decoration rather than as a reflective heater. It is heavy and I have been unable to weigh it - it requires 3 men to lift it - but I estimate in the region of 3 cwt - 4 cwt or 300kgs - 400kgs .
