FOR SALE : ABOUT 12.5 SQ.M. VICTORIAN GEOMETRIC FLOOR TILES
Because of the probitive cost of replacing the broken tiles and covering the extended area of my verandah I am having to use a cheaper alternative. The old tiles have been taken up carefully and are for sale. As you will see they comprise squares, triangles and rectangles in both red and black and are unglazed. The squares are 4 ¼" (108mm), the triangles are 4 ¼" on both short sides and the rectangles are 6" (152mm) x 1 ½" (38mm). All are ½" (12.7mm) thick. They are embossed on the rear with the name The Architectural Pottery, Poole. Apparently the Architectural Pottery were in business from 1854 to 1895 - which dates the tiles as Victorian - when they were bought out by Carters who, subsequently, became the Poole Pottery. The Architectural Pottery was highly renowned for its geometric and encaustic tiles. They are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

The tiles are in good condition for their age. Over 80% of them are sorted by colour and shape and packed in 17 boxes. The vast majority of those came up with very little bonding or grout. The remaindercame up with the base cement - up to about 1 ¼" thick - but, as most were bedded in what appears to be a lime based mortar, they should clean up OK after a few days soaking in water.

There are also:
1 box of 34 red and 26 black square tiles which are broken into 2 parts but could be glued together.
1 box of broken rectangular tiles. So there are 19 boxes altogether
Some broken tiles.

The tiles are located in Tisbury, Wiltshire and you are welcome to inspect them. My rough estimate is that the total weight is about 800kg (16 cwt). Collection is preferred but I would palletise them for £25 plus transport at cost.

I've no firm idea of their value but on the basis of what I was quoted from salvage merchants it would seem that they would expect to get at least £2500 so I would expect at least £1000 for them. If you can convince me that that is an unreasonable valuation then make me an offer.

A full listing of the tiles and more pictures can be seen on my website.
